Systems Thinking Standards Institute Appoints Dr. Derek Cabrera to Science Board

May 27, 2025 — The Systems Thinking Standards Institute (STSI) proudly announces the appointment of Dr. Derek Cabrera to its esteemed Science Board. Dr. Cabrera, a renowned systems theorist and cognitive scientist, brings decades of experience in advancing systems thinking across education, government, and industry.
As Faculty Director of the Graduate Certification Program in Systems Thinking, Modeling, and Leadership (STML) at Cornell University, Dr. Cabrera has been instrumental in shaping the next generation of systems thinkers. He is also the co-founder of the Cabrera Research Lab, where he leads research in complexity science and cognition. His contributions to the field include the development of DSRP Theory (Distinctions, Systems, Relationships, Perspectives) and VMCL Theory (Vision, Mission, Capacity, Learning), which have been widely adopted in various sectors .
The STSI Science Board is an interdisciplinary committee responsible for reviewing and approving new models, protocols, and practices for inclusion in the Global Systems Thinking Standard (STS®). Dr. Cabrera's appointment underscores STSI's commitment to scientific rigor and innovation in systems thinking.

Dr. Cabrera's appointment follows his recent induction as Secretary General of the International Academy for Systems and Cybernetic Sciences (IASCYS) and his ongoing involvement with the Systems Engineering Advisory Board at the United States Military Academy at West Point .
