May 27, 2025 — The Systems Thinking Standards Institute (STSI) is honored to announce the appointment of Dr. Michael J. Kwinn, Jr. to its Science Board. Dr. Kwinn brings over three decades of leadership in systems engineering, military operations research, and strategic innovation across academia, defense, and industry.

Dr. Kwinn currently serves as Professor of Practice and Director of Engineering Management at the University of Arizona’s Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering. His distinguished career includes 25 years of service in the U.S. Army, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and served as Professor and Deputy Department Head of Systems Engineering at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Following his military career, Dr. Kwinn held senior leadership roles at Raytheon Technologies, focusing on program start-up and systems integration. He also served as President and CEO of the Pat Tillman Foundation and founded the Friends4Michael Foundation, reflecting his commitment to service and community engagement.

Dr. Kwinn's academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Management Science from the University of Texas at Austin, an M.A. in National Security Affairs from the Naval War College, an M.S. in Systems Engineering from the University of Arizona, and a B.S. in General Engineering from West Point.

As a Fellow of the Military Operations Research Society and a member of INCOSE and ASEM, Dr. Kwinn has contributed significantly to the advancement of systems thinking and engineering management.

“Mike brings an extraordinary blend of rigor, leadership, and lived experience to the Science Board,” said Dr. Derek Cabrera, STSI Chairman. “He’s one of those rare individuals who understands not just the tools of systems thinking, but how those tools succeed or fail based on the mindset and structure of the thinker wielding them. His insights have had a lasting impact on me personally, and his contributions to STSI will be equally profound.”

At STSI, Dr. Kwinn will play a pivotal role in shaping the Global Systems Thinking Standard (STS®), ensuring its scientific rigor and practical applicability across sectors.
