Systems Thinking Standards Institute Appoints Leisa Thompson to Science Board

May 29, 2025 — The Systems Thinking Standards Institute (STSI) is proud to announce the appointment of Leisa Thompson, General Manager of Environmental Services at the Metropolitan Council, to its Science Board. With over four decades of leadership in public infrastructure, water sustainability, and regional systems planning, Thompson brings a wealth of experience to STSI's interdisciplinary team guiding the Global Systems Thinking Standard (STS®).
Since joining the Metropolitan Council in 1983 as a laboratory manager, Thompson has advanced through various leadership roles, culminating in her appointment as General Manager in 2012. In this role, she oversees a division of over 600 employees responsible for treating 250 million gallons of wastewater daily across nine facilities, serving 111 communities in the Twin Cities region. Under her guidance, the division has consistently achieved 100% compliance with federal clean water discharge permits, earning national recognition for operational excellence.
Thompson's commitment to environmental stewardship extends beyond wastewater management. She has led initiatives in water quality monitoring, climate resilience, and stakeholder engagement, including collaborative efforts with tribal nations to ensure culturally respectful infrastructure planning.
"Leisa’s leadership exemplifies the integration of systems thinking into public service," said Dr. Laura Cabrera, STSI Board Chair. "Her ability to navigate complex environmental challenges with strategic vision makes her an invaluable addition to our Science Board."
At STSI, Thompson will contribute her expertise to the development and refinement of the STS®, focusing on sustainable infrastructure and regional systems planning.
